Double-spread feature in the Sheffield Telegraph by David Bocking to celebrate 20 years of Health walks in Sheffield. May 2019.

20 years ago the first health walk in Sheffield was established in Parson Cross. From those modest beginnings, in late-April 1999, the scheme has flourished and there are now walks at 29 locations across the city every week. Over the years we've notched up just over 400,000 walker attendances. Initially administrated by the Ranger Service (Sheffield City Council) and supported by the then South West Primary Care Trust, these walks have always been delivered by trained volunteers. Today, thanks to austerity cuts, the volunteers don't only deliver the walks but they administer the scheme and train up new leaders. Since April 2016 when we became volunteer-led, the Sheffield health walk scheme has been called 'Step out Sheffield'. We are the biggest entirely volunteer-led scheme in the country and provide regular walks and social inclusion, free of charge, for hundreds of people every week on a miniscule budget.
